Family-owned and operated, award-winning Oak Barrel Ice & Creamery specializes in artisan-crafting small batches of delicious gourmet ice cream and sorbets using locally-sourced fresh ingredients.
While 2015’s summer sales were positive, the business stuttered when schools reopened. OBIC was at risk of closing when owner Greg Raynes contacted Valley Sierra SBDC for assistance. Working closely with SBDC lead consultant Claudia Newcorn, an in-depth financial analysis revealed opportunities for a stronger pricing structure, improved purchasing practices and streamlined customer service methods, plus a need for a much stronger marketing outreach effort. Determined not to give up on his dream, Greg tackled every problem. This included the need for an informative website, which VSSBDC consultant Greg Falken helped OBIC develop.
As a result of SBDC assistance, sales doubled in 2016 and OBIC has achieved solid profitability. Oak Barrel is on track to increase sales by another 50% in 2017 and Greg has recently been able to employ 2 more part-time people bringing his full staff to 7.
In 2017, OBIC won the Turlock Journals’ Reader’s Choice award and in 2017 Oak Barrel was awarded 209 Magazine’s ‘Best Ice Cream Shop’ in Stanislaus County award. The future is “sweet and creamy” for Oak Barrel Ice Cream!
