Laura Kuffler has been in the legal field for about 15 years. In looking at how people get help for legal issues, she realized that she could help in a different way. While working for the court, she realized that there could be a mobile service that would come to her clients at a convenient time and place, so they wouldn’t have to take a lot of time out of their busy schedule. So, Laura started Advantage Legal Document Assistance and Notary Service.
Laura provides mediation services in Family Law, Estate Planning, Small Claims and some Limited Civil issues as well as Deed preparation and other miscellaneous documents as she is less expensive than hiring an attorney. She also provides convenient notary services throughout Tuolumne County. She believes in providing a service that helps people understand the process so they can be part of the solution.
Laura started planning her new business while still working full time with the courts by completing her education as a Paralegal required by the state. However, she also knew that she needed help identifying and completing the many steps necessary to starting a business, but she wasn’t sure how to find the help she needed. She had a thousand questions. Laura says, “I had heard about the Alliance Small Business Development Center (now the Valley Sierra SBDC) from a friend and signed up.” She continues “Then I realized that there was help out there and better yet, it was free.” She was put in touch with Lee Ann Fox who told her about the 2016 SBDC Small Business Expo in Sonora. She attended the expo where she met other local small business owners and many of the consultants involved in SBDC.
Laura continued “I was put in touch with SDBC Consultant Howard White, PMP and he helped me put a plan in place.” Howard’s Project Management Professional (PMP) certification and experience helped Laura put together a business launch plan. Howard also told Laura about the low cost SBDC QuickBooks class. She was put in touch with SBDC consultant Jennifer Hawks who teaches this class, and she helped Laura get her business accounting and taxes started off right.
The SBDC also provided assistance and guidance with Human Resource issues, developing marketing materials (logos, websites, social media, and traditional marketing), obtaining financing/business loans, and many other areas of business expertise.
Laura knows that if (and when) additional challenges come up, SBDC is only a phone call away. “The great thing about it is they are available as long as you need them and it’s free!” Laura has been in business for 9 months now and is going strong. Congratulations to Laura Kuffler on starting and operating a successful business, we were glad to help!
