When Michael McNulty first came to the Alliance SBDC for assistance in the fall of 2009, he was refining an idea for improving residential security at its most vulnerable location, the Sliding Patio Door. One year later after both attended numerous SBDC patent and marketing workshops, receiving over 20 hours of consulting from 4 different SBDC consultants and with two patent pending products, Michael and his son Matt started Patio Security Doors. According to Mike, “the best advice I received from the SBDC was how patenting and protecting my original idea was not only “doable” but had the potential to become a highly profitable business.” “I learned how to take my idea, make it into a viable plan and then complete the steps to create a real business.”
In early 2011, Mike returned to the SBDC with the hopes of expanding his young business. He worked with Alliance SBDC marketing expert Claudia Newcorn learning how to use his website and Social Media to grow his business. After working with the SBDC for several months Mike and Matt decided to form Nx Stage Security in July, 2011. Nx Stage incorporated new and improved product designs Mike McNulty and Hayward, CA police officer along with Mike and Matt’s business skills to produce significant sales growth. The McNulty’s found success by taking their security doors and windows to trade shows and fairs across northern California in the summer and fall of 2011.
As of Feb, 2012, Nx Stage Security has 7 employees working in the business. Orders for their U.S. manufactured products are coming into their website, www.nxstagesecurity.com from all over the U.S. Today, the company is looking at establishing a manufacturing facility near Modesto in order to produce both their custom and “off-the-shelf” products locally.
At least one private investor is talking to Mike and Matt about helping them expand “significantly”. In early March, Nx Stage Security was in talks with a national home improvement and contractor supply chain to stock their products. With home security such an important concern today, the future is very bright indeed for Nx Stage Security! Mike expects
sales to reach $600K in 2012 and exceed $1 million by the end of 2013. If the local manufacturing facility comes to fruition, Nx Stage plans to hire upwards Mike and Matt McNulty at 2011 CA Trade Show of 20 additional employees by the end of 2012.
